What is direct contact defined as?

During the survey, you may be asked:

In the last 14 days, have you been in direct contact with anyone who has had COVID-19 symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19?

According to the CDC guidelines, close contact is defined as:

Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period* starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.

This definition is used for contact tracers to decide whether or not a person should isolate. Our general guidelines is the following:

  • If in the past 14 days one of these statements below holds true, you should answer yes
    • I been within 6 feet of someone that has COVID-19 for 15 minutes or more
    • I have been coughed or sneezed on

*Coughing and sneezing are methods of transmitting COVID-19.
